Les Arcs continues to go from strength to strength. Already one of France's strongest Alpine ski areas thanks to huge amounts of varied terrain, the resort received a massive boost when it was linked with neighbouring La Plagne in 2005 to form the huge Paradiski area.
Arc 1950
Les Arcs itself is made up of several villages at different altitudes. Bourg Saint Maurice in the valley is the lowest and linked to Les Arcs proper by a funicular railway. Up the hill, there is a confusing number of settlements to choose from: Arc 1600, Arc 1800, the recently built Arc 1950, Arc 2000, Vallandry and Villaroger, as well as smaller hamlets such as Plan Peisey,
Those hankering after nightlife should aim for 1600, 1800 or 2000, while families and couples will enjoy the relaxed environs of the smaller villages. Wherever you stay, there's easy access to the incredible terrain on offer in the area.
Getting there
With the direct Eurostar connection (08705 186 186, www.eurostar.com) from Waterloo to Bourg Saint Maurice, you can minimise your carbon footprint by taking the train and, for once, it won't impinge on your precious skiing time. Alternatively, fly to Lyons and take the bus (http://satobus-alpes.altibus.com) to Bourg. Transfer time is about two hours 30 minutes.
